If you were like me, your dress code during 2020 was decidedly more casual than any other year. Those of you who have seen me realize that I have taken the modeling of t-shirts, gym shorts, and sweat pants to a whole new art form.
This Thanksgiving week in 1970, I had just been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and had arrived at St Jude Children’s Hospital the previous Thursday.
Here is some food for thought before we get together on Wednesday night. When Jesus fed the crowd until “they were filled” (Mark 8:8), he showed them what the Kingdom of God is like and how different it is from the cruel world in which they lived.
Friends, I am so excited to announce to you our new all-church Bible Study — welcome to GROW! Join our pastors and our church family on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm to look deeper into the Bible and find ourselves in the great stories of God.
Since March 14, 2020, when covid hit and the quarantine started, we have received more than 300 new requests for legal and financial help — requests that we recognize as social symptoms of the virus just as surely as a pulmonologist recognizes shortness of breath as its physical symptom.
We are officially approaching the half-way point in our reading plan. I would love to hear from you about why you still continue to read the Bible. What motivates you at this point? What would you say to someone who is considering reading the entire Bible? Join us on July 6 at 1:00 pm for our next Bible Challenge meet up!
In Sunday’s Gathering we will proclaim the Good News of Jesus and the power of Christ – working in and through us – to overcome the sins of racism and injustice. Please take the time to read these two powerful testimonies. May God’s Kingdom come, may God’s will be done, on Earth as it is in heaven.
Over the years since the 1970s, I have discovered many spiritual practices and words that point to what I began discovering in my most vulnerable of times as a patient at St Jude. This Sunday, June 7, is National Cancer Survivor’s Day. If you or someone you love is a cancer survivor, we invite you to join us to share personal stories and explore some of the challenges and gifts of having to deal with cancer.
We are approaching the half-way point in our Bible reading plan and I am excited that you are sharing this journey with me! Friends, I pray that you continue your daily (or almost daily) readings and complete this challenge with me. The next meet up is this Saturday, June 6!
