FUMCFW offers support and growth opportunities for a variety of life stages and challenges — from private counseling and small groups to serving those who are homebound and ill. Plus, programs and events designed to help bring new meaning to your faith journey are offered throughout the year.

Congregational Care Ministers (CCMs)

Our CCMs are a team of caring, trained lay ministers who work with our clergy to help provide a greater level of care to our church family through:

  • Hospital visits and telephone calls
  • One-on-one support in times of illness or need
  • Support to grieving families
  • Proactive ways to encourage and care for people in our congregation

From marriage to divorce, loss, and more, we offer ongoing support in group settings to help meet your needs.

Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life, and Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. What’s more, researchers predict that during the next decade the largest population in our nation’s history will be dealing with age-related dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Take advantage of the dementia care training and education we offer to the Fort Worth community.

Preparing for Marriage

While most couples and their families spend countless dollars and hours planning their weddings, how much usually gets invested in preparing for the marriage itself? Marriage is one of the biggest decisions in life, and we’re here to help you get ready. Take the time to:

  • Develop an understanding of differences in personalities
  • Explore powerful means of enhancing communication and emotional intimacy
  • Recognize and develop strategies for dealing with issues that could hamper enjoyment of life together

Grief Support

Even when you lose a loved one, you are not alone. Take comfort in sharing stories with others who are grieving and understand. This group will give you tools and healthy ways to handle grief on the road to healing.

After experiencing divorce, it takes time to put your life back together. This series uses divorce process rebuilding blocks to help you face divorce in a supportive setting.

Counselors

Rev. Phyllis Barren, MA, Ed., MS, LPC

Rev. Phyllis Barren is the Associate Pastor of Support Ministries at FUMCFW where she also serves as the minister to the Wesleyan Adventurers Senior Adult Ministry and United Methodist Women.

Phyllis received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from North Texas State University in 1986 and her master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Texas Woman’s University in 1988. Her thesis work was “A Comparative Study of Limits in Play Therapy in School and Clinical Settings.” Phyllis obtained her seminary training from Perkins School of Theology and received her master’s degree of Counseling/Psychology from Tarleton State University in May 2014. She is also trained by Dr. John Gottman as a Gottman method couples therapist.

Phyllis believes counseling provides a safe and secure place in which you explore virtually any aspect of your life. She works with children, individuals, couples, and family units.

Phyllis will tailor your sessions to meet the needs of each person. Listed here are just a few of the common issues addressed:

Shirley J. Kalling, M.Ed., LPC

Shirley J. Kalling has been in private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor since 1994. She has a B.S. in Elementary Education from Rio Grande University, Ohio, and a Masters from Texas A&M University. She has experience as an elementary, secondary, and special education counselor, and facilitates grief support groups as requested through the church. She focuses on short-term counseling to address many issues clients are dealing with. She offers a wide array of counseling services including individual, family, couples, and group.

Rev. Bryan Bellamy, MS, LPC

Bryan Bellamy is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern. He has a Master of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Tarleton State University. He has worked with and facilitated groups for individuals dealing with divorce, grief, unemployment and job transitions, men’s issues, as well as those caring for loved ones. Bryan offers individual counseling and premarital counseling to adults age 18 and up.

Come to the back door by the covered parking of the Foundation Building and your individual counselor will let you in.

Before 5:00 pm: Free parking is available East of the Foundation Building in visitor spaces numbers 26 – 29, in the Main Lot across the street from the church near the statue of Jesus, and at metered parking along the sides of the building.
After 5:00 pm: All parking around the building and on the street is available at no cost.

Hospital Stays & Visits

If you or someone you love is in the hospital, give us a call and we’ll be sure to stop by for a visit, prayer, and support. Your health is important to us — and so is your privacy! Because your private health information is protected under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), when you list FUMCFW as your church home on your hospital admission forms, that doesn’t mean we’ll be notified.
