The news of the shooting at Robb Elementary came to me while I was writing the message for this week’s service. At this point, mourning and anger and more mourning is the only thing that makes sense.
I woke up this morning to James Taylor’s version of “The Water is Wide.” It’s always struck me as a tragic Irish love song, sad and mournful. But it occurred to me this morning, as I listened, it is really a song of deep hope and a belief in the redemptive possibilities of love.
We are still reeling from the shock following the massacre of innocent children and adults at Robb Elementary School yesterday in Uvalde. We live in a crisis of gun violence, but even this cruel season cannot numb the horror of what has happened.

One of our graduating seniors asked me earlier this year why I’m in youth ministry. There are a lot of answers to that question, and any of them could be the reason and all of them are very much a part of the truth.
Our class of 2022 entered our Youth Ministries program the same time I did, and I have been here for their entire youth ministries tenure. So it seems only appropriate that I graduate with them as well.
