No distrust made him (Abraham) waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God
Romans 4:20
I have the privilege of walking alongside people through their lives and seeing their faith in action. So I wonder – what is faith in God?
Let’s consider the faith of Abraham. There were many parts to it, besides Abraham believing that God would give him a son. First, Abraham heard God when God spoke to him and moved from his homeland to the territory of Canaan. God and Abraham had several interactions when God reassured Abraham about God’s promise of a child. Abraham heard God again and did not dismiss these promises as wishful thinking, hallucinations, or simply something impossible. When Abraham heard God, he received that promise as a covenant – God will provide the son and the land and Abraham and all his descendants will be faithful to God.
What do we mean when we say “I believe in God”? Our faith goes beyond creeds and theological statements about who God is and what God does. Our faith is ongoing and personal. To have faith is to be looking for opportunities to hear God. To have faith is to be certain that God cares about our lives and that no small detail is insignificant to Him. To have faith is to make serious decisions about our lives according to God’s will. To have faith is to be able to change our mindset, our plans, and our dreams when God lays out a different path for us or leads us in the direction of the yet unknown.
God bless,
