This coming Sunday is Youth Sunday. It’s a day that our youth get the opportunity to lead the congregation in worship. It’s a day that our church announces to our teenagers that your home is in the church and not just the Justin Building. It’s an incredible day! Our theme for this Youth Sunday is “True North” and it comes out of the John 14 passage when Jesus makes his infamous I AM statement, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” It’s a passage that has been used in a variety of ways both to include and exclude. However we’re not going to talk about it that way.
Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life has always struck me, and I believe many others as not as a statement of how to be on the inside, a member of the club, but as a way of talking about what it means to truly live. Jesus exemplifies what it means to bring life into the world. Jesus is the living, breathing way to true life, a life of loving God and loving others. Jesus is our True North, guiding and directing us along the path of life, never moving, and always there. Like the North Star, Polaris, Jesus shines in the darkness, helping us to orient our lives so that we may know what our next steps may be.
Join us this Sunday as we explore what it means to have Jesus as our True North. Join us as we celebrate this bright star in the darkness in the sacrament of communion. Finally, come and join us as we embrace and are lead by an incredible group of teenagers.
