Senior Scholars of FUMCFW

“Good habits formed at youth make all the difference.”

— Aristotle

FUMCFW Youth Ministries is a community that welcomes, empowers, and serves all youth — preparing them to go out to be God’s people in the world. This coming Sunday, May 22, we will honor this ministry as its youth lead the traditional worship service at 11:00 am in the Sanctuary. Through the years, FUMCFW has watched our youth (some from baptism to confirmation to graduation) grow into amazing young men and women. That’s why it is bittersweet to say goodbye and good luck to our graduating seniors.

We recently celebrated as a congregation on Senior Recognition Sunday, and we are now proud to announce the five exceptional graduates who received FUMCFW Senior Scholarships.

Baker and Beaver Scholarships

Four FUMCFW high school graduates received scholarships provided by the Baker and Beaver Foundations. These scholarships are awarded by the special committee of the Board of Trustees who evaluate applications from graduating seniors based on church involvement, financial need, and academic achievement. They also consider involvement in community activities outside the church. The scholarships are for educational support (tuition, books, and supplies) for students (age 19 and younger) preparing to attend institutions of higher learning.

This year, Roy Eaton and Eva Isbell were the Trustees responsible for selecting the scholarship winners. “We had an outstanding group of applicants this year,” Roy says. “The selection was very difficult. As usual, Eva and I wish we had more money to honor our outstanding applicants.”

Jackson Bell and Megan Summers received the $1,400 Ralph Beaver Scholarships, and Chandler and Paige Summers received the $1,000 William E. Baker Scholarships. This was a special year for the Summers family as triplets Megan, Chandler, and Paige all applied and received awards. “All three have been very active in the youth programs of the church,” Roy adds. “In their applications they mentioned the tremendous influence that Martin Leathers had on their lives.”

 Good Neighbors Scholarship

One FUMCFW graduating senior received the Good Neighbors Scholarship awarded by the Sunday School class. This scholarship is intended to promote an outstanding senior’s education. Funds are to be used for tuition, housing, or books for a two- or four-year institution of higher learning.

This year, Carter Dickson received the $1,000 Good Neighbors Scholarship. Marsha Waugh, who was on the scholarship committee that reviews the applications, says that Carter stood out the most among all the other applicants. “He represents excellence and he’s a good neighbor kid,” Marsha explains. “When you laid out all of his accomplishments, he just seemed the natural one to be the recipient.”
