The theme for our October Good Book Club – on October 13– is Remember. Our three book selections will focus on this that help us remember, and things worth remembering.
Kindergarten and Younger:
Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems
Willems is the top name in modern children’s picture books, and with good reason. If it’s not the amazing illustrations, it’s the witty and thoughtful texts. When Trixie and Daddy forget Knuffle Bunny at the neighborhood Laundromat, the drama begins. (The fact that “Bunny” is featured in the titles of two books in a row is just a coincidence. Promise!)
1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade:
Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partidge by Mem Fox, illustrated by Julie Vivas
Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, a rather small boy, lives next door to a nursing home in which resides Miss Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper, his favorite friend, because she has four names as well. When Miss Nancy “loses” her memory, the intrepid Wilfrid sets out to find it for her.
4th Grade and Older:
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.
