No Age Requirements to Be a Cheerful Giver

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly
or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV)

Co-worker Janet Ball passed on two offering envelopes to me thinking that they were noteworthy. Excellent penmanship identified the generous givers as two of our younger disciples-in-training, ages 10 and 8. One envelope was further identified by beautiful artwork and a note that said, “hope this can help.” I think I am safe to say that both gifts came from “cheerful givers.”

Our two younger givers may not fully grasp the concept of how their gifts will make a difference, but it is obvious by the sentiment shared — “hope this can help” — that they have faith in the transformative power that their gifts make possible.

Another encounter with a cheerful giver came as a result of Director of Hospitality Lisa Helm sending me an email about a consistent visitor who was interested in membership. During their conversation, the prospect also mentioned the desire to learn more about our Stewardship Ministry. I love making these follow-up phone calls. Not only did we have a delightful conversation about how warm and welcoming First Church is towards visitors, but we talked about the multitude of life-changing ministries made possible because of FUMCFW’s Stewardship Ministry. The donor was enthusiastic and ready to make a gift that she had already set aside intentionally for tithing.

The visitor — and soon-to-be member — views the discipleship of giving as a way of expressing gratitude and joy for God’s gifts in her life.

The three gift amounts were quite different, but the benefits received were without a doubt the same for each donor: FAITH-BUILDING, GRATITUDE and JOY!

I hope that every time you make a gift to First Church you too experience these “cheerful” outcomes.

I am thankful for these three donors just as I am thankful for your ongoing generosity. Your gifts make it possible for First Church to share the Good News with so many! That is definitely something for all of us to cheer about!

Looking forward to seeing you in church on Sunday!
