LOVE at First Street Mission
“Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone — we find it with another.” Thomas Merton
So much of our culture seems to be based on success that is measured by our independence and how we persevered and did things “all on our own”. In reality we all need each other and we are all connected.
I LOVE working at First Street Mission! But the work that the staff and volunteers do together is difficult much of the time. We would like to help or to “fix” the people during their short visit with us, but we see that major life solutions will take time and need the cooperation of the individual and the whole community working together. It has been true in my life and I am grateful for those who shared my journey with me through the hard spots and on to better places. What we are able to do is be present with someone for those few moments and offer genuine concern and try to encourage, along with the lunch or groceries or clothes that we can give to them.
The Bible tells us that we were created for relationship and community, and that the greatest spiritual gift is love (I Corinthians 13).
It’s all about love. How will we live into that? How can we work together in community to bring about good in our world? After all, we know in our hearts that love and relationships are where we will find the most meaning and richness in of our lives.
Grace and peace,
