Why do we like to give — and get — toys at Christmas? Perhaps it’s because when our basic needs are taken care of, a new toy brings us a special sense of joy.
But what if your childhood reality was something far different? According to the Tarrant County Homeless Coalition, Tarrant County’s homeless population has grown 10 percent since 2011, the first reported increase since 2006. And 31 percent of these homeless people are children. For these children, most of what we take for granted in our day-to-day life — things like a pillow to sleep on, our own toothbrush and toothpaste, clean clothes and shoes that fit — would be a rare and wonderful gift that would change their day-to-day reality far more than any toy.
So what can we do?
This year’s Christmas Inside-Out theme offers a chance to bring joy to children individuals and families living in need at Christmas in a whole new way. Watch for details coming soon about how to get involved in this.
