O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! — Psalm 95:1
There are many ways to lift up your voice in church. Some people prefer to sing hymns with the congregation. Others resonate loudly from the choir loft to lead us in traditional worship. Cornerstone Youth Choir, Choral Union, Crossroad Singers, and Adoramus Choral Ensemble offer anthems and special music to enhance the Sanctuary worship experience for all of us.
And now, the Singing Men of First Church, a choir comprised solely of male voices, will join together for the first time on Sunday, February 14, during the 9:30 and 11:00 am traditional worship services in the Sanctuary. All ages are welcome, with one exception: no girls allowed! Men, this one is just for you.
Peggy Graff, Organist and Interim Director of Music & Worship Arts, says this is the first time since she has been at FUMCFW that we have had a formal choir made up of all men from the church. “It’s so exciting to offer this opportunity to all men — not only those in Choral Union, but those who would like to do this on a short-term basis,” Peggy exclaims.
Peggy believes that for a church our size, Music Ministries needs to offer more music opportunities for people. To help fit music into the busy lives of our members, FUMCFW wants to offer short-term choirs — or what Peggy calls “sprint choirs.” These choirs will only rehearse two or three times before singing together. That way, people are relieved of a long-term commitment. “In this case, we want to provide an opportunity for men who wish to sing but don’t want the weekly rehearsal commitment,” Peggy explains. Whether you are a member of Choral Union looking for something different, or if you are interested in a short-term choir experience, this is your chance to join your First Church brothers in song.
As Peggy describes it, the choir loft will be filled with men only, which is unusual and something you don’t see very often. “Men’s voices are so robust and resonant,” she adds. “They will fill every square inch of our Sanctuary with their glorious tone.”
The Singing Men of First Church will perform under the direction of Mr. Robert Stovall, Interim Director of Adult Choirs. The choir will learn three songs: “Rise Up, O Men of God” by Kenneth Jennings, “Be Thou My Vision” by Dan Forrest (with cello, harp, and piano accompaniment), and “And Can It Be?” by Dan Forrest. All of the men will gather to rehearse as follows:
• Wednesday, February 3, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm in the Choir Room
• Wednesday, February 10, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm in the Choir Room
• Sunday, February 14, at 8:30 am in the Choir Room (prior to the 9:30 am worship service)
