An old Jewish proverb says, “God created human beings because God loves a good story.”
Well then, it’s no surprise why we love a good story, too. It’s how we make sense of life, connect more profoundly with one another, and often how we best hear and understand the truth of things.
So, I hope you’ll take note of two significant storytelling events happening this weekend at our church: The Tejas Storytelling Conference (Friday and Saturday, with workshops and evening concerts) and the Sacred Tales Concert on Sunday in eleven:eleven at the Historic 512.
Each year the summer Texas Storytelling Conference takes place in different cities and this year it’s being hosted by FUMCFW in Wesley Hall and classrooms throughout the building. Of note is the focus on family stories and storytelling and the featured tellers, Donald Davis and Pippa White. The New York Times said of Davis, “his stories left listeners limp with laughter at the same time they struggled with a lump in the throat. One of the premier tellers on the international circuit!” Humorist, author of numerous books, and a featured teller annually at the International Storytelling Festival, Davis will lead workshops during the two-day event as well as perform at the two evening concerts and during the Sunday morning Sacred Tales concert in eleven:eleven.
Pippa White, an actress and former educator, travels across the US festival and college circuit sharing rich historical tales and hilarious personal stories of both high drama and laugh out loud mischief. “Utterly charming . . . Pippa White sings and speaks as if her life is invested in every word, communicating every feeling.” — Theater Review, NYC. She will also be featured throughout the weekend, both nights, and on Sunday!
The two-day conference will feature workshops and daytime events with other tellers and educators from across the state and the US with a focus on collecting and telling family stories, as well as bringing story to page in writing memoirs.
Tickets are available for the whole weekend, as well as for single day passes and individual evening concerts.
Then, this Sunday, July 1, Donald Davis and Pippa White will join Tom McDermott, Brad Thompson, and the band for some special music and an inspiring and entertaining morning of stories at eleven:eleven at the Historic 512 (which, of course, is free!).
I hope you can join us at any of the events or evening concerts
