Ladies & Lace!

Whether or not you’ve been watching TV’s Downton Abbey, I think you’ll be as fascinated as I am with Ladies & Lace, our UMW’s Big Event this year!

In the era that surrounds Downton Abbey, people were still writing letters, speaking to one another in genteel ways — and still getting their points across! Much was expected of the Duke and the Lady of those times, and it was quite a “step up” in life if you were a valet for one of them.

Now, we’ll not spend the whole time retelling the Downton Abbey story lines — but our guest speaker for this event is Francine Segan, who happens to be a noted historian and lecturer from New York City — and an expert on that period of history. You may have seen her on the Today Show as well as the Food Network and PBS,  and she is a regular on Martha Stewart Living radio. You’ll be swept away, at least for a time, by her vibrant and delightful presentation of this bygone era!

The fun will begin on April 8 at 10:30 am at Ridglea CC, and we hope you’ll dress in clothing from that period (but only if you want to!) and be advised this event provides a really good opportunity for a fabulous hat.

There won’t be a bad seat in the house (even with all those hats!), as we will have big screens and small screens placed strategically throughout our venue so that everybody will have a good view.

We’ll of course enjoy a delicious luncheon, and you can sit with your friends and have a great time. We are lining up some extraordinary Silent Auction and Prize Drawing items you’ll want to explore as you arrive and begin to mingle and reconnect with old and new friends in this wonderful annual event.

Although this is our 35th year to host an annual spring Event, this format program type is all new, making it an especially exciting opportunity for our UMW to continue its good work of raising money to directly benefit women and children in our community. Over the past five years, the UMW has raised approximately $126,000, and we hope that along with the charm and nostalgic graces of this genteel afternoon, our event proceeds will again reach new levels of generosity as we reach out to serve women and children living in need in our community.

Tickets to this wonderful event will be $35 and will go on sale soon, so put Ladies & Lace, Tuesday April 8 on your calendar . . . and start looking for your hat and gloves!

See you soon,
Nancy
