Kenya Mission Trip
For the last six years, FUMCFW has been actively involved in supporting approximately 250 orphans and vulnerable children in Kianjai Village in Meru, Kenya, with love, generosity, and important educational experiences. Although the Kenya Mission Team has returned from their 2016 trip, Emily and Tim McDermott left their hearts in Kenya. This was Emily’s fourth trip to Kenya and Tim’s fifth, and Emily says that each time they go it reminds them why they return to the same place to be with the same kids year after year.
“The trip was wonderful,” Emily recalls. “Although our team was small, we were mighty.” This year’s team distributed over 200 mattresses to the children in our program, sang songs together, ate together, and learned from one another. “The children we sponsor know heartache like no child should ever know,” Emily says. “They often go to sleep hungry and rarely know the comfort of a warm safe space to sleep, much less a mattress, so to provide them each with a mattress to call their own is more than a gift to them — it truly is a blessing.”
The team also did a journaling workshop with the high school kids and distributed 20 disposable cameras. “We can’t wait to see how those all turn out!” Emily exclaims. “The insight the children in our program have is astounding and the joy they carry with them is something we should envy. In the darkest of conditions they see the light, and although they don’t know the individuals who help sponsor them through school, they love and pray for the members of FUMC Fort Worth daily.” Just like the McDermotts, our hearts are in the right place when it comes to helping children — here, there, and all around the world.
