As we continue our prayers and financial support for those affected by the Hurricane Harvey in South Texas, we add to that list the members of our FUMCFW Early Response Team (ERT), who left Thursday and will be serving through Sunday in Corpus Christi and its surrounding area to lend assistance in the areas devastated by wind and flood damage from Hurricane Harvey.
“Special thanks to our Youth Leaders, Youth, and others in our First Church family who joined together in the Justin Building this past Sunday to help us put together 150 Cleaning Buckets,” exclaims Rev. Chuck Graff. “You all are amazing, and we had so many of you come to help that we were done shortly after noon, and we are very grateful!”
In addition to the flood bucket assembly (part of the buckets went to Corpus Christi with the team and the rest went to areas of need in Conroe), Rev. Chuck Graff expresses his gratitude for the generous response, from financial assistance and other donations to time and prayers from our FUMCFW family.
Arriving with a supply of the flood buckets, tools and other donated items and purchased supplies, the team is staying at First UMC, Corpus Christi. Working as directed, with flexibility as key, the team is helping Corpus Christi area families clean mud and debris out of their homes, remove tree limbs and branches from yards with trained chain saw volunteers, and seal up windows and lay out tarps to help close up rooftops. In addition they are providing listening ears and spiritual care to those who are still digging out—literally and emotionally — from the widespread devastation of Hurricane Harvey.
As you read this update, our team, wearing gloves, steel toes boots, and extreme compassion, is dealing with not only the debris and emotional devastation brought about by Hurricane Harvey, but also extreme humidity and an abundance of mosquitos. As this dedicated group puts its collective willingness to love God and serve others into action in this time of great need, let’s all gather behind them with prayers for safety, strength, patience, and openness to how they can help most in any situation they encounter. This team includes:
Rev. Chuck Graff
Rev. Phyllis Barren
