This past week the program staff and clergy had the opportunity to participate in a special celebration. On Tuesday morning we all went up to the room where the Nello group was playing dominoes to wish our oldest member a very happy birthday.
When we sang to Glenn Johnston, we were a few days early. His 103rd birthday was Saturday, October 12. Glenn has been very active in First United Methodist Church since he became a member seventy-four years ago on April 16, 1939. Not only is he a part of the Nello group, but Glenn was also a member of the Fishermen’s Club.
The Fishermen’s Club was organized by Dr. Lamar Smith when he was associate pastor back in the 1950’s and 60’s to visit in the homes of people who were prospective members of the church. Lamar reports that Glenn was one of the most faithful visitors, reaching out to people to invite and welcome them into the church.
What a great celebration! In an age when we quickly move from one thing to another, he reminds us of the power of what author Eugene Peterson called “a long obedience in the same direction.” Glenn’s faithfulness to Christ and the church through the decades is an inspiration! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GLENN!
Grace and Peace, Tim
