Small Groups for Prophetic Listening and the Church’s Soul Visioning

“To ‘listen’ another’s soul into life, into a condition of disclosure and discovery, may be almost the greatest service that any human being ever performs for another.”

— Douglas Steere

“One of the tasks of true friendship is to listen compassionately and creatively to the hidden silences. Often secrets are not revealed in words, they lie concealed in the silence between the words or in the depth of what is unsayable between two people.”

— John O’Donohue, “Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom”

Last night we had a wonderful report at the Board of Steward’s Meeting about the recent “Focus First Leadership Summit.”

And there is much excitement about specific areas of focus for our church as we move forward.
One of the most significant things is our new and growing emphasis on the importance of deep listening and discernment throughout the community.

Through the guidance of our leadership team, working with consultant Susan Beaumont, we are already growing in our ability to follow the Lenten theme of “listening for grace” and finding more clarity in God’s calling.

One of the ways we will be exploring God’s presence and guidance more intentionally over the next months and years will be in small groups of many sorts. We would love to hear from you if you have any thoughts or questions about this growing emphasis.

For it is in such intimate listening and caring, that prophetic listening and soulful visioning emerge.
(Though I have mentioned the “Ego Stories / Soul Stories” blog before, I find it helpful to remind myself of the distinction often. Also, here is a blog I wrote on “Soul Vision” a little over a year ago.)

Grace and peace on the Lenten Journey,

Len
