Today’s Scripture:

Psalm 96:1-9

Sing to the Lord a new song!
    Sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord! Bless his name!
    Share the news of his saving work every single day!
Declare God’s glory among the nations;
    declare his wondrous works among all people
    because the Lord is great and so worthy of praise.
He is awesome beyond all other gods
    because all the gods of the nations are just idols,
        but it is the Lord who created heaven!
Greatness and grandeur are in front of him;
    strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Give to the Lord, all families of the nations—
    give to the Lord glory and power!
Give to the Lord the glory due his name!
    Bring gifts!
    Enter his courtyards!

Bow down to the Lord in his holy splendor!
    Tremble before him, all the earth!

Food For Thought:

This psalm opens with an invitation to praise ― and just in case we don’t know if we have any reasons to praise God right now, the psalmist also gives us a few very big, very good reasons to praise: God’s saving work, wondrous works, greatness, awesomeness, power above all other gods, creation of heaven, strength and beauty. Even when our own circumstances might distract from reasons to praise God, we should be reminded of God’s eternal goodness and glory. So we are invited to express our praise by giving. We can give glory. We can give gifts. We can give our time and presence. We can offer our entire selves to God in response to God’s true greatness.

God you are good! You are great! You deserve my praise! I know that I should be sharing the news of your saving work every day. Let your love flow out of me. Let your peace and your mercy pour out of me. Fill me up so that your strength and beauty overflow into the world around me. Amen.
