Today’s Scripture:

Hebrews 12:1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.

Food For Thought:

This passage contains a beautiful metaphor of the Christian life. In it, the writer describes the Christian faith as a race. Now, I’ve never been much of a runner, but I can understand this image. When we come to the Christian faith, it takes a great deal of work on the front end. Then the more we study God’s word and immerse ourselves in the Christian life, the less it will feel like exertion. I am also into baby steps. No one becomes a runner without a great deal of practice and hard work. Likewise, no one becomes a strong Christian without a great deal of practice and hard work. One of my favorite slogans is “Fake it til you make it.” I think this applies to our faith also. So, fake kindness, love, patience, and peace, until these attributes are a natural part of your life.

God of delight,

you Wisdom sings your Word

at the crossroads where humanity and divinity meet.

Invite us into your joyful being

where you know and are known

in each beginning,

in all sustenance,

in every redemption,

that we may manifest your unity

in the diverse ministries you entrust to us,

truly reflecting your triune majesty

in the faith that acts,

in the hope that does not disappoint,

and in the love that endures. Amen.
