Today’s Scripture:

Psalm 96:1-9

O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above all gods.

For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.

Honor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts.

Worship the Lord in holy splendor; tremble before him, all the earth.

Food For Thought:

In this Psalm, the Psalmist praises God for the marvelous things that God has done. This is a beautiful psalm of praise. Today, I want you to think about the things that you could praise God for. The other day I was talking with a friend about praise and how important praise is for us human beings to hear—especially when we feel like we are in a thankless job. She is a stay at home mom and doesn’t get the kind of praise that she deserves because much of the work that she does is for her children. The more I thought about our conversation, the more I thought about how many people there are in praise-less or thankless jobs. I thought about the garbage collectors, the mail carriers, teachers, nurses, those who care for the elderly, the list goes on and on. All of these people do jobs that help our communities but often don’t hear the praise that they need. So as you think about this psalm today, think about someone that needs praise and be the person that brightens his or her day. Praise is such a simple thing to do, but we all too often forget to offer people praise for what they do.

Redeeming Sustainer,
visit your people
and pour out your strength and courage upon us,
that we may hurry to make you welcome
not only in our concern for others,
but by serving them
generously and faithfully in your name. In your holy name we pray, Amen.
