Today’s Scripture:

Hebrews 11:1-6

Faith is the reality of what we hope for, the proof of what we don’t see. The elders in the past were approved because they showed faith.

By faith we understand that the universe has been created by a word from God so that the visible came into existence from the invisible.

By faith Abel offered a better sacrifice to God than Cain, which showed that he was righteous, since God gave approval to him for his gift. Though he died, he’s still speaking through faith.

By faith Enoch was taken up so that he didn’t see death, and he wasn’t found because God took him up. He was given approval for having pleased God before he was taken up. It’s impossible to please God without faith because the one who draws near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards people who try to find him.

“I’m not just a whimsical figure who wears a charming suit and affects a jolly demeanor. You know, I-I-I’m a symbol. I’m a symbol of the human ability to be able to suppress the selfish and hateful tendencies that rule the major part of our lives. If you can’t believe, if you can’t accept anything on faith, then you’re doomed for a life dominated by doubt.” — Kris Kringle

When I was in Jr. High, my church was without a youth director and money. We had about 40 kids and no money to hire someone. So Mrs. Alta Mae Smith stepped up to the plate and said she would do it. She was a retired school teacher and in her late 70’s. I was not sure I wanted an “old lady” doing this job. Would she be cool? Would we have fun? Well, it was the best 6 years of my life. She was amazing and the original 40 youth turned into about 60 youth. We loved her and she loved us back.

Mrs. Smith was passionate about us learning Bible facts and being able to express our faith in God. She made a Go-Fish game with the books of the Bible, and a baseball game to teach us Bible facts.

I remember one verse she said we all had to memorize, and it was Hebrews 11:1. Faith is the assurance of things Hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. She drilled into our heads that by having faith in God, we would all experience an adventure. We might be ordinary but we can do extraordinary things with our faith. The atmosphere of faith-filled living overflows with hope and certainty. Hope looks ahead to the fulfillment of God’s promises, and certainty stems from the security of God’s love and faithfulness. As Christians we are called to believe and be filled with hope, joy and love.

Our gracious and loving God, we are thankful for all the great people that have loved us and have molded us with their faith. Because of your great faithfulness, we live in eternal security. Let our faith grow and shine throughout your creation. Amen.
