1 John 3:1-3
See what love the Father has given us that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
Food for Thought:
My favorite line in this passage is “we should be called children of God.” The image of being children of God is interspersed throughout the Scriptural narrative. What images come to mind when you think of being a child of God? For some people, the image of being a child of God is a comforting one, especially if one had a good childhood with loving parents. For others, the image of being a child might have negative connotations because they may have grown up in a difficult and unloving environmentWhen I think of this image of God, I think that it is an ideal upbringing─a house full of unconditional love, forgiveness, grace, kind words, and kind actions. What image of God do you have? How do you think your image of God effects how you treat yourself and others?
Bless us with your healing presence; make us hungry for justice; strengthen our faith; and increase our love for others, especially those we find it most difficult to love. In your holy and precious name we pray. Amen.
