1 John 5:1-6
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.
Food for Thought:
This is a difficult passage to swallow. In this writing, John talks about if we love God we will follow his commands. While this is true, it calls into account the fact that many of us don’t often live up to the commands that God has placed upon our lives. We fail and we falter but we try again. The Christian life is not an easy one, especially with all the modern day distractions, but one of the greatest calls upon our life as a Christian is to love the Lord our God with our whole heart and our neighbor as much as we love ourselves. Think about one person who needs the love of God shown to them especially today and reach out to that one person.
Faithful God, make our hearts bold with love for one another. Pour out your Spirit upon all people,
that we may live your justice and sing in praise the new song of your marvelous victory. In your holy and precious name we pray, Amen.
