Today’s Scripture:

Psalm 34:9-14

O fear the Lord, you his holy ones, for those who fear him have no want.

The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good?

Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.

Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

Food For Thought:

The line that stands out to me in this passage of Scripture is: “Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.” This is pretty much a summary of the Golden Rule. (Do unto others as you would have them do to you.) This verse reminds us to seek out the good, to watch what we say and do, and to be the peacemakers of this world. Think about your own life. How are you doing the things described in this passage? In what ways are you falling short?

O God,

our guide and help in alien and contentious places:

as Esther prayed faithfully and worked courageously

for the deliverance of your people,

strengthen us to confront the oppressor

and free the oppressed,

so that all people may know

the justice and unity of your realm. Amen.
