The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.
Food For Thought:
This is one of the most familiar passages of Scripture. It is often read at funeral services. It is a wonderful passage, which reminds us that God is with us throughout our lives. God is the shepherd and takes care of God’s sheep. We are protected by God. We are watched over by God. We are loved by God.
God of the lowly and the mighty,
you know the ugliness of your people
when we harm and destroy one another,
yet you offer us
forgiveness of our sins if we but turn to you.
Expand our hearts to receive the mercy you give us,
that, in turn, we may share your grace and mercy
with others each moment of our lives. Amen.
