There is more to life than food and more to the body than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither plant nor harvest, they have no silo or barn, yet God feeds them. You are worth so much more than birds!
“You sit around here and you spin your little webs and you think the whole world revolves around you and your money. Well, it doesn’t, Mr. Potter.” — George Bailey
We’ve all known someone like Mr. Potter; his money didn’t fix everything. As a young adult it is easy to get caught up in the world of consumerism. I remember getting my first job out of college and finally having a paycheck. I was able to buy stuff I thought I really needed. As a young married couple we had friends who were always buying something new and better. It didn’t take us too long to figure out that all that buying wasn’t making our friends happy. There was always a level of discontentment that someone else had something fancier or what they thought was better. George Bailey got it right in turning down Mr. Potter’s offer. He figured out that there is much more to life . . .
Our good and gracious God, we look forward to the joy and celebration of our Savior’s birth. We pray that our focus remains on his birth and away from the commercial world that surrounds us. Help us to share this joy with the world around us. Amen.
