Today’s Scripture:

Mark 1:14-15

After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee announcing God’s good news, saying, “Now is the time! Here comes God’s kingdom! Change your hearts and lives, and trust this good news!”

Buddy: Sounds like somebody needs to sing a Christmas Carol.

Jovie: No way.

Buddy: The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.

Jovie: Thanks, but I don’t sing.

Buddy: Oh, well, it’s just like talking, except longer and louder, and you move your voice up and down.

Jovie: I can sing, I just choose not to sing. Especially in front of other people.

Buddy: If you can sing alone, you can sing in front of other people. There’s no difference.

In this part of the scripture Jesus is just starting his ministry. He has learned that he is the son of God, and he has been tempted in the wilderness. Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the news of God, unafraid of who would hear him or what the reaction would be. In the movie, Buddy is also unafraid of letting others hear what he has to say. He encourages Jovie to sing out loud for all to hear. If she can sing alone she can sing in front of other people. Jovie can sing in front of others; she just chooses not to. How many of us are like that as Christians? We can pray silently, talk with others who share our ideas and theology, sing in hymns in our heads; but when push comes to shove, we are silent. As my daughter pointed out to me, this quote is perfect for me. I pray, but I choose not to pray out loud in front of others. I am learning to share my faith openly for all to hear. I sing out loud but not very well. When we take our vows and join the church we are asked to uphold it with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, AND our witness. This season, I will challenge myself as well as anyone reading this to be more “loud” in our praying and singing and telling of Jesus’ birth. If you can do it alone, you can do it in front of other people. There’s no difference.

God, give me the courage to treat my life and my faith like a song. To spread the good news of your son, Jesus Christ, I know I must sing just a little bit louder with actions and my love. Change my heart and my life so I will trust this good news and sing of your kingdom in the world. Amen.
