Today’s Scripture:

John 4:27-30, 39-42

Just then, Jesus’ disciples arrived and were shocked that he was talking with a woman.  But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”  The woman put down her water jar and went into the city.  She said to the people, “Come and see a man who has told me everything I’ve done!  Could this man be the Christ?”  They left the city and were on their way to see Jesus…Many Samaritans in that city believed in Jesus because of the woman’s word when she testified, “He told me everything I’ve ever done.”  So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.  Many more believed because of his word, and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this one is truly the savior of the world.”

Food For Thought:

Many Samaritans believed in Jesus because of this woman’s testimony.  They initially believed because of her!  She was convinced and couldn’t keep it in!  She was moved and had to share!  They believed because she believed.  But by the end of the passage, people no longer relied on the testimony of the woman, for they had encountered Jesus themselves.  They had seen him, heard him and experienced the truth of who he was.  They saw firsthand that he was the Savior of the world.  Many of us believe at first because someone has come alongside us and told us their own story of encountering Jesus—a Sunday school teacher, a parent, a pastor, a friend, a grandparent.  But once we have experienced the love of Jesus Christ and the power of his Spirit, we no longer rely on the story of someone else.  We have our own!  But where would we be if that first person hadn’t told us their story?

God, thank you for _________, who loved you so much and told me their story of knowing you.  Please give me the courage and the faith to tell my story just like _________ and the Samaritan woman did!  Turn my attention to the ways I have encountered you and to the places you have been present in my life.  Open my eyes to a person who needs to hear my story so that they will begin to have their own story to tell.  Amen.
