Today’s Scripture:

Psalm 139:1-10

Lord, you have examined me.

You know me.

You know when I sit down and when I stand up.

Even from far away, you comprehend my plans.

You study my traveling and resting.

You are thoroughly familiar with all my ways.

There isn’t a word on my tongue, Lord,

that you don’t already know completely.

You surround me—front and back.

You put your hand on me.

That kind of knowledge is too much for me;

it’s so high above me that I can’t fathom it.

Where could I go to get away from your spirit?

Where could I go to escape your presence?

If I went up to heaven, you would be there.

If I went down to the grave, you would be there too!

If I could fly on the wings of dawn,

stopping to rest only on the far side of the ocean—

even there your hand would guide me;

even there your strong hand would hold me tight!

Food For Thought:

What a beautiful prayer!  What a lovely reminder of how deeply known and loved we are by God!  How comforting to be known by a God who is completely aware of our coming and going, our minds and our hearts, our bodies and our souls.  How satisfying to remember that we are completely surrounded and embraced by God’s love at all times.  There truly is nowhere we can go to flee God’s presence, for God is with us.  Our God is bigger than we can ever understand, yet closer to us than we can even fathom.  The God of the entire universe is concerned for and present with each of us.  Wow!

God, clear my head today of clutter and chaos.  Clear my mind of distraction and fill me up with awareness of your presence.  Fill me, surround me and strengthen me in the knowledge that you really are always with me.  I want to know you like you know me.  Make my heart like yours.  Amen.
