As of December 1, Mark Sorley has joined our church staff as Director of Facilities and Construction. Mark, a 20-year church member and Sunday morning parking lot Greeter Extraordinaire, also happens to be heavily steeped in construction and facilities project management and has worked on projects including the Southwest Airlines renovation project at Love Field and the American Airlines Headquarters, along with other corporate clients. In this capacity for First Church Mark will oversee construction budgets and schedules and represent the church in interfacing with consultants, contractors, and vendors, and provide written and verbal project status updates to church leadership.
“One of the things our church leaders recognized a couple of years ago as we contemplated our Next90 Building Expansion Program was that we would need a construction manager-owner representative on site to work on behalf of the church to help guide the process,” remarks Larry Ammerman, who will retire as Business Manager December 31. “We now have someone who is very experienced at this in Mark Sorley. Mark will work primarily with construction projects and work very close with Sandy Williams, Director of Operations, on other facilities projects.”
Going in to this Next90 Building Expansion project, it made sense to our Staff Parish Relations Committee to split Larry’s current job responsibilities into (at least) two distinctly different parts. “Mark will be taking responsibility for the property side and Steve will be working on the financial side,” Larry explains. “They’ll work side by side, but independently.”
“It’s so good to be here,” says Mark with a smile. “I’m excited beyond words to be here and be part of this exciting time in our church!”
Mark will office in the Foundation Building (in Phyllis Barren’s former space). Mark and his wife, Amy, who is also very active in the church as member of Choral Union and Adoramus as well as a leader who has served in many capacities (she rotates off the Board of Trustees at the end of this year) have two adult children, and Claire and Tanner Hemphill, kids Liam and Annie, Will and Hannah Sorley both of whom were active in youth and youth choir.
