Welcome to Advent 2017: First Light

The dawn of a new day:
When the first glimmer of light makes its presence known.

The dawn of a new spiritual reality:
When the first rays of God’s Incarnation in Christ herald the potential for new beginnings.

Hope’s poetry.
Love’s most precious gift.
Joy’s defiant smile.
New possibilities for Peace.

Through God’s love, just when our night seems darkest — dawn breaks anew. First Light.

“The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.”
(John 1:9)

Nancy Fisher75Practicing Unbounded Generosity With a Year-End Gift

Here at First Church we are truly grateful for all gifts received throughout the year, but we also recognize that there are additional opportunities like an annual bonus or an unexpected gift, along with current tax benefits, which makes year-end giving desirable. With the stock market gains seen in 2017, gifts of appreciated stock may be a very attractive option. Read more.

kat-bair75A Smaller Advent

Kat Bair

This year for Advent, we’re going small. Taking inspiration from the church’s larger advent theme, First Light, and its visual of a single candle, we over at the Justin plan to reign in the ever-expanding, all-encompassing Christmas madness, and practice a little self-restraint. Read more.

Christmas Cheer is THIS Sunday — 2:30 – 5:30 pm. We meet at the church, then head out on buses to Christmas carol at nursing homes and retirement communities. This is a great outreach experience for families. Then we return to the church for hot chocolate, cookie decorating, carriage rides, and more! Kids want to make a difference in their world. Charme75Ten Thousand Places — DiscipleChurch

Charme Robarts

Usually, we don’t need to be convinced of it and mostly we don’t need a definition. Love is the object and subject of our life. We want it, seek it, give it, receive it, remember it. Its loss breaks us; its presence revives and heals us. Even when we don’t say anything, there is this knowing about love that passes between us — we know that we are sustained by it, and that it sometimes works in spite of us. Read more.

Ten Thousand Places — eleven:eleven celebration

When it’s your turn to give the message at church and the topic is love, it’s both exciting and daunting — what a big target — it will be hard to miss it! And yet, what more can be said? Well that, of course, is the thing about love. There are no words, there are many words. Love’s loss breaks us, its presence heals and revives us. We sometimes shut our eyes to it because of our tendency to focus on lesser things. Read more.
