UMW Sunday

By September 25, 2020

This Sunday in all our worship services and beyond we as a church will celebrate the longstanding service of our own vibrant chapter of United Methodist Women (UMW), led this year by President Sara Harris who will be speaking in all services.

One of the most faithful and longstanding ministries of our church is our United Methodist Women (UMW) community that this year marks its 80th year at First Church. This Sunday in all our worship services we will recognize the many contributions of our own UMW, this year led by President Sarah Harris. Sarah will speak in our two live online worship services, The Gathering at 9:30 am and Sanctuary at 11:00 am to tell us more about this vibrant multigenerational group, our UMW Circles and programs, how we serve our missions, our upcoming virtual fundraiser, and much more.

As Staff Liaisons for UMW, Rev. Phyllis Barren Lisa Helm agree that they feel extremely blessed to be part of this group to provide staff support. “UMW is a group of women that strive to live out their faith in service and action,” Phyllis says. “UMW serves God by supporting women, youth, and children within our local church, in our community and the world.  This is a precious group of women that builds strong friendships, welcomes all people, and truly supports and loves one another.

“This dynamic group is deeply committed to service,” Lisa agrees. “They give countless hours of volunteer service to various organizations and financial support as well, but it’s also a multi-generational community of women who enjoy supportive friendships.”

When I began this ministry several years ago, UMW was instrumental in helping further our culture of hospitality at First Church and I am so grateful for their love and support. I’ve had so much fun getting to know and work with them.

As a deeply devoted community of women who know God, develop creative and supportive fellowship, and expand concepts of mission, United Methodist Women is the largest denominational faith organization for women. Celebrating its 80th anniversary at First Church this year, UMW’s long history of living this legacy welcomes all women, regardless of age or interests. If you’re a woman with a heart for services and fellowship with other like-minded women, there is a place for you in FUMCFW’s chapter of United Methodist Women.

This year, with COVID-19 restrictions keeping us from gathering in our usual ways, all women are invited to our virtual monthly Luncheons & Programs — and our history-making virtual live auction to be held live online at umw.fumcfw.org in lieu of our annual fundraiser. This annual event, this year chaired by Liselotte Bowman, benefits women, youth, and children in our community and beyond via First Street Methodist Mission, Methodist Justice Ministry, Kids Hope USA, United Methodist Home, and United Community Centers. Through its service and pledges, FUMCFW UMW makes a decided difference in all the lives it touches.

Watch this space for details about this year’s UMW fundraiser — a virtual auction on Friday, October 23 at 7:00 pm with lots of surprises and special opportunities to support this outstanding organization and the wonderful causes they serve.
