Be sure to join us in the Sanctuary on Sunday, October 27 at 9:30 and 11:00 am in the for a combined Worship experience and celebration to mark the 90th anniversary of the groundbreaking of this beautiful building our First Church faith community calls home.
For you trivia buffs out there, this will be the exact 90th anniversary of that worship service prior to the groundbreaking on October 29, which of course is also the day the stock market made its historic crash, sending the entire nation into The Great Depression. Nevertheless, we broke ground anyway — and went ahead with construction in uncertain times . . . anyway — and for the past 90 years generations of our congregation and guests have enjoyed the fruits of that enormous leap of faith that has become our legacy.
Both of these combined worship services will feature portions led by each leader of our four main First Church worshipping communities — Dr. Tim Bruster, Sanctuary; Rev. Lance Marshall, The Gathering; Rev. Tom McDermott, eleven:eleven; and Charme Robarts DicipleChurch. We’ll also enjoy music featuring our eleven:eleven revolution band, as well as Choral Union and the Anne S. And Henry B. Paup Sanctuary Organ.
Want to join the fun? Wear a vintage piece of clothing or wear/carry an accessory from the decade of your choice between 1929 – 2019. This grand nostalgic celebration will also feature classic cars from each decade on display on 5th Street, as well as church memorabilia from the archives and refreshments in Wesley Hall 9:00 – 9:30, am 10:30 – 11:00 am, and 12:00 – 12:30 pm.
