We’ve all been stuck at home for weeks, and for many, that time has been spent doing things we might not “normally” do. And for many First Church goers, one of those new hobbies has been beginning – or improving – our home yoga practice.
Yoga has many benefits to the human body, mind, and soul. Fluid motions combined with holding poses, deep breathing, and a time of heightened, mind-body connectedness can help ground the very root of your being and create a sense of connection that we may otherwise be lacking. With two class options, Hatha Flow and an Adaptive/Chair class for those with some mobility issues, our First Yoga classes can’t be beat!
Linda Blanchard, FUMCFW member and resident, certified, yoga instructor, has been very graciously offering her online yoga classes during this time of quarantine free of charge. (Thank you, Linda!) Beginning in the month of June, these wonderful classes will remain online, but now, she asks that you begin using the easy-to-use punch card payment option. Classes will be $10 each, or $70 per 10-class punch card.
When asked how beginning this zoom offering at the beginning of the crisis has evolved over time, Linda suggests, “Since the onset of the crisis and beginning our regular Yoga meetings, I have seen an increased attendance in both my Hatha Flow and Adaptive/Chair classes!” Unexpected – but welcome – gifts. She continues, “An at-home yoga practice is always encouraged when beginning your journey, but this has taken things to a new level. My living room has become my very own yoga studio.” And she says
her students have also taken to the new at-home situation quite nicely.
Although, at first, she encountered a few hiccups, Linda has created a tranquil, personalized, tailored yoga experience for everyone who participates in her classes, regardless of ability. Linda says, “I send out, in advance, the peaceful music playlists I usually use for in-person classes, and accentuate our two words for the week – this week it was inhale “acceptance” and exhale “serenity,” and finish out our class with a special quote and sometimes a 3-5 minute guided meditation.”
This experience has taken many of us through some unexpected twists, and that’s true for First Yoga! Since this online offering has sparked such support, Linda explains, “I plan to continue offering yoga on zoom even after the crisis comes to a close. It’s created a sense of connection for me – seeing those little squares pop up on my screen each class gives me such joy knowing we’re all practicing together even when we can’t be physically together, we’re still connected.”
There are many day and time offerings to fit your quarantine schedule! The Hatha Flow class meets on zoom Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30 am as well as Mondays and Fridays at 5:00 pm. The Adaptive/Chair class meets Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:45 am and Wednesdays at 1:30 pm.
