Set to Serve in the Face of Disaster

By February 8, 2018

When disaster strikes, our Early Response Team is ready to serve those facing the aftermath. We recently had another UMCOR training session for 30 new members who learned how to support those impacted by disasters, help families clean up their homes, create team and individual roles, be self-sufficient in securing equipment, and even tarp a roof. “We have a role for everyone who wants to serve on our team, and we will be prepared even if a disaster strikes in our local area and our church is needed,” says Rev. Chuck Graff, our UMCOR trainer who led the session. “We now have over 65 volunteers that we have trained here at First Church from our congregation and our district who will be ready to respond and serve together. What a fantastic team!”

Our group has already served near Canton when the tornadoes struck, traveled to Corpus Christi to help with victims of Hurricane Harvey, and helped during other disasters. “Now we have an even bigger team, and will be traveling back to Victoria, Texas, soon to help with recovery with our brand-new First Church Disaster Response Trailer!” Chuck exclaims. “Please pray for our team.”
