Methodist Justice Ministry (MJM) announced that the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded a grant to MJM to implement Court Filing Fees for Women and Children impacted by Abuse and Neglect.

The Texas Bar Foundation provides funding to enhance the rule of the law and the system of justice in Texas, especially for programs that relate to the administration of justice; ethics in the legal profession, legal assistance for the needy; the encouragement of legal research, publications, and forums; and the education for needy; the encouragement of legal research, publications and forums; and the education of the public.

Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $20 million in grants to law-related programs. Supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation’s largest charitably funded bar foundation.

MJM is a law firm that focuses on a specific need — women and children who are victims of domestic violence, neglect, and abuse. MJM’s support, however, does not end when a judgment or injunction is issued.

Instead, the staff at MJM continue to support its clients as they learn to live a life free of violence and fear and reconstruct their network and independence. Cindy Mendoza, MJM Board Member, stated, “As a former family law judge in Tarrant County, I sadly faced recounts of domestic violence daily. One of the most serious and hopeless issues victims face is the inability to afford legal fees and counsel to guide them through the system, thus being unable to break the cycle of abuse that affects not only them but also their children. I have known Brooks Harrington for many, many years and had the privilege of hearing many of the cases he brought to court as legal counsel for MJM. Mr. Harrington brought his cases with experience, strong advocacy, and the compassion necessary to walk victims through the difficult process of facing their accusers and having the demeaning task of testifying to their horrific experiences of abuse. Although we have a strong legal community in the counties MJM serves, resources are limited for victims of abuse who have little or no financial ability to hire an attorney. The need for the services provided MJM is critical.”

The mission of the Methodist Justice Ministry is to provide light and hope to families who have experienced neglect and domestic violence by providing free legal representation and ongoing support to ensure that the children are with a caring and protective caregiver and the women can lead a life without the fear of violence and abuse.
