Children’s Ministry Transition: Leaning into Big Feelings

By January 17, 2020

Transitions can be tough, and goodbyes are hard, but rest assured that we at FUMCFW are doing everything we can do to make this Children’s ministry transition as stress-free as possible.

By now, you are probably aware of our recently chosen, fabulous interim Children’s Minister, Dr. Mike Marshall. Having our resident “Mikester” serve as our Children’s Minister in the interim while our nationwide search continues was an easy choice. Your children already know and love him, as he has served at First Church on and off for 20 years!

More than anything, Mike wants the children (and parents) of FUMCFW to know that, “There is nothing more important for my ministry role right now than to be a part of the extraordinary vision, team, and system that Mark has put into place. I have been welcomed by Mark over the years to help out with seasonal activities and worship services — and it has been a blast! I know many of you and your children well. I cherish these relationships and look forward to developing them even more…Please know that I will take this interim responsibility very seriously, even if it’s in my own ‘playful/silly’ kind of way.”

We have been so lucky to have Mr. Mark and even luckier that he has surrounded himself with trustworthy leaders on all sides. As FUMCFW parent, Amber Shive remarked, “The search committee knows that we have some large Converse shoes to fill, and we are grateful that Dr. Mike Marshall has taken on the role in the interim.”

Mark and Mike have worked together often, from VBS to Children First to Day Camp to Baptism of Lovies and much much more. To prepare for this enhanced role, Dr. Mike has also been shadowing Mr. Mark throughout the month of January to ease into this transition as smoothly as possible.

While times of transition and change can be filled with worry and fear, they are also chock-full of big feelings like excitement, wonder, and curiosity! Let’s use this time of transition to lean into those excited and curious feelings at the wonder that is the only true constant in our lives — change!
