Building Bridges with Open Door: A New Adult Sunday School Class

By February 14, 2020

The creation of this new adult Sunday school opportunity came about out of need. Some of our First Church family saw the need to develop and foster a new Sunday school offering that included some of the younger people in our church. A Sunday school class where you don’t have to be married but can be, where you can have kids or not, you can be a member or be undecided. A class where everyone felt welcome no matter what stage in life they are. The main hope is that this class can facilitate a safe place to spark unique and exciting conversations, where questions are encouraged, and most importantly, a space where everyone feels comfortable – no matter what.

We don’t want the fun to end at the end of class though! We hope to continue our friendships and fellowship beyond the walls of our fine church and open each of our hearts, homes, and minds to unique mission opportunities, fun mixers at our houses, parties to celebrate victories and hugs in times of grief.

If you and/or yours would be interested in nurturing your faith, participating in “being the change” on a variety of social concerns, open to a range of perspectives, and enjoy lively discussion, you’ll find us here at Open Door.

On our first meeting on February 23, the class will enjoy getting to know one another around food and coffee from 9:30 – 9:50 and a lesson/discussion with Rev. Linda McDermott on how to begin and run a successful Adult Sunday School class. We have fun and exciting teachers lined up for the next few weeks, including Dr. Rebekah Miles. Dr. Miles is a member of FUMCFW and a very popular professor of Ethics and Theological Studies at Perkins School of Theology, SMU.

We are all looking forward to forging new friendships, growing a community, as well as learning and growing in our faith journeys together.

Following the class, all are invited to worship in our special Next90 Service of Commitment for All Church Worship in the Sanctuary at 11:00 am.

To further develop relationships and have a special time of fellowship, the class will be enjoying lunch together after worship at 12:15 pm on February 23 at Cantina Laredo (2 blocks from the church). We will have a cluster of tables reserved. Children are always welcome!
