4th of July at First Church

By June 28, 2020

July 4th is here. A day reserved for pure, unadulterated – Americana-at-its-finest – frivolity has arrived, but it just doesn’t seem…right? It certainly doesn’t feel the same as it used to. But then again, nothing really does. So, maybe this year is the year to start making some new Independence Day traditions, by celebrating America’s Independence with us, here at First Church.

Robert Stovall and Peggy Graff, Director and Assistant Director of Music and Worship Arts at FUMCFW, have curated a selection of fun and inspiring musical pieces that are sure to fill your hearts and souls with the whimsy of the American spirit! Join us on July 4th at noon and 6:00 pm, for our first ever FUMCFW Virtual Patriotic Concert.

Peggy and Robert have enlisted the help of Dr. Lacey Hays and the talented musicians with DFW Brass in order to fulfill their vision for the concert. Peggy explains, “I’ve been wanting to do this for years and years, and now we finally have the opportunity to share some secular favorites that celebrate American composers, musicians, and even a few, fun surprises!”

The DFW Brass musicians will lift up some fan-favorites like Copeland’s, “Fanfare for the Common Man,” and even a Cohen “Salute to the Armed Forces” medley, paying special tribute to the men and women who have served or are serving in the military.

Whether you prefer Country Music, Broadway show tunes, or more orchestral performances, this concert has it all – truly something for everyone. Robert will even be singing, a true American vocal solo of his own, with Lee Greenwood’s, “God Bless the USA.”

We know this year does feel and look very different from year’s past, but don’t let that dampen your spirit. Let this concert help lighten your load this year and add some much needed fun and frivolity to your own family’s celebration. This year also just feels like the right time to uplift our beloved front-line workers and essential first-responders and to celebrate the true strength of our fellow human. It will be the perfect underscore to your own July 4th celebration from the comfort and safety of your home. If you can’t join us the day-of, we will also be sharing a special encore performance on July 5th at 6:00 pm. The concert will be live streamed on our site at fumcfw.org/live, Facebook, and YouTube.

We hope you join us for this evening of true Americana fun! It’s not every 4th of July that you get to hear such talented musicians perform such lively and fun tunes from the comfort of your couch! Tune in and listen with the whole family, and celebrate together, the resilience and wonder of the American spirit.
