The Book of God’s Love
Psalm 119:1-5, 105
Dr. Mike Marshall
This coming Sunday will be one of those wonderful celebrations in our 11:00 am Sanctuary worship service. About 50 third-graders will be presented with their own Bibles from our church. They are given in memory of Melissa Dearden, who was a bright and loving light in our Children’s Ministries slightly over 20 years ago. Her parents continue to make a difference in her name through these treasured Bibles! Read more.

The Place Where God’s Crazy Kingdom and Earth Collide
Just a few weeks ago we took 20+ high school teenagers all the way up to Purdy, MO, a place some would describe as heaven on earth. It’s a large patch of land nestled on a hill in the middle of Missouri farmland where teenagers and campers with intellectual and physical disabilities come from around the congregation to embody what only most can imagine as God’s kingdom on earth. Bring Your Bible THIS SUNDAY!
Remember the day when you were given your first Bible? Remember the sense of awe and reverence you felt as you first opened its cover to find, perhaps, your name inscribed in it with the date and name of who was giving it to you? Think for a moment about that new book smell — and the intrigue tickling your imagination as you flipped through those paper thin pages of tiny print — maybe some of it red — for the very first time. Welcome Home, First Church ERT!
Helping Corpus Christi and Rockport area homeowners sort through their belongings one room at a time, our FUMCFW Emergency Response Team (ERT) members hit the ground running last week for Hurricane Harvey relief. They also helped get tarps on roofs to prevent more water coming in these homes, delivered new T-shirts (compliments of John Howard, Dana and Ted Settle) at the local high school, and put those flood buckets (thank to Jim and Judy-Lynn Barrow for donating the 150 flood buckets we filled together) to good use as the massive post-storm cleanup began. 2018 Church Leadership Nominations
Know someone who would make a great leader in our church community? Now is the time to make your choices known!
Our Lay Leadership Committee began its annual work early in September, and we would love to hear from you about anyone you believe would provide capable leadership for our church. Read more.
Send us your DOGS!
No, not the actual dogs. What we’re looking for here is an assortment of favorite dog photos from our First Church family for use in our promotions of Dr. Bruster’s October sermon series: “The Gospel According to Dogs: What Our Four-Legged Friends Can Teach Us,” beginning Sunday, October 8. As the official work of the United Methodist Church continues through the Commission on a Way Forward, we anticipate they will release their final report next spring. As we approach hearing from them, we want you to be informed about the conversation and prepared to engage in ideas from all perspectives on human sexuality. Read more.

A Celtic Pilgrimage Into the Inner Landscape of Beauty and Beyond
Dr. Len Delony
During this past summer, Tom McDermott and many others from our church went on a pilgrimage to Ireland. For a while before they left, I was almost the color of the Emerald Isle with envy, but by the time they departed, I had recovered and was delighted to join them (in prayer) and hear about the journey upon their return. Among many experiences, one of the most meaningful was when they built a “Peace Labyrinth” on the border of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Read more.
Creativity in the Chaos with Hannah Kirby . . .
Rev. Tom McDermott
These past few weeks I’ve found myself thinking and praying for a lot of the little towns in South and Southeast Texas — towns around Corpus Christi and Houston. Towns like Refugio, where our First Church response team was working this past week in helping to clear rubble and provide food and help. Read more.
One Last Goodbye
It is Wednesday morning around 7:00 am as I am writing this final post. All of the memories come rushing in as my fingers maneuver their way around my keyboard. There is a lot that we can celebrate over these past few years that we’ve spent together as a congregation and youth pastor. We’ve seen and experienced God do some pretty great things. Read more.
