“Use What God Has Given You”
First in the series: “The Gospel According to Dogs: What Our Four-Legged Friends Can Teach Us”
Psalm 139:1-14; 1 Corinthians 12:4-6
Dr. Tim Bruster
This coming week in traditional Sanctuary worship we’ll begin a new worship series, “The Gospel According to Dogs: What Our Four-Legged Friends Can Teach Us,” in which we will examine over the next three weeks the intriguing parallels we can find between the nature of dogs and the messages of the Gospels. Whether you’re a “dog person” or not, I think you will enjoy this lighthearted look at how God’s love is reflected in the nature of dogs — and in our relationships with them. Read more.
Robert Stovall gives a quick preview of the music offering for this Sunday.
Sit, Stay, Post, and Tag Us!
To add to the fun of Dr. Bruster’s October sermon series, post pictures of your four-legged friend to your social media pages using the hashtag #gospeldogs and tagging FUMCFW.

Focus First Q&A with Steering Committee Members
Check out these Q&A interviews from Danica Knight and Nancy Tully, two of our Focus First steering committee members tasked with gathering and organizing the feedback provided by our congregation via the survey and Focus Groups brought to us by our consultant, Susan Beaumont.
The Steering committee includes: Chair Jim Whitton, Nancy Tully, Patricia Healy, Haley Manulik, Robert Holman, Samantha Morgan, Danica Knight, Dr. Tim Bruster, and Staff Liaison Lance Marshall.
We’ll hear from each of them in this series with their own reflections on the Focus First process as well as their individual experiences in providing the organizational work designed to help fold in-depth congregational feedback into a true churchwide plan for growth and development of our exciting future in our growing Downtown Fort Worth community.
Have You Taken the Focus First Survey?
Our goal is 1000 responses, and as of today we are at 367. If you haven’t taken the survey, add your voice today!
Your feedback is important to us as we discern who we are as a church and what we are called to become. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey by October 20, 2017. You can become part of the Focus First process by investing just 10 – 15 minutes of your time. Read more.

We’re A Mess. Jesus Loves Us.
We’re a mess. Jesus loves us. That, in essence, was the entire message of Middle School Retreat last weekend. If I am confident of anything, it’s that everyone reading this blog, everyone I’ve ever met, everyone I follow on Instagram, is convinced at least once a week that they are the only person who doesn’t have their life together. Teachers — Thank You!
We are halfway through the October Attendance Challenge! And at this point, NO class is out of the running. In fact, many of the classes who were way back after week one made big moves forward last week! But what is most inspiring is that not only are we seeing unbelievable attendance numbers . . . but you are filling their sweet heads with beautiful messages of faith, hope, and love. Read more.
At the Heart of Focus First: “How Is It With Your Soul?”
Dr. Len Delony
Almost 280 years ago, a teaching fellow at Lincoln College in Oxford, England, was awestruck by an experience about which he later wrote in his journal “I felt my heart was strangely warmed.” Those, of course, were the words of John Wesley, a primary leader of the renewal movement that came to be known as “the Methodist Church.” Read more.
The Ten Commandments (and a Few Suggestions)
Rev. Tom McDermott
I always loved the Tonight Show with Jay Leno segment called Jay-Walking. Well, it’s a love-hate relationship, I suppose. The questions and answers left me with such a mixed reaction of laugh-out-loud incredulity at the responses people gave along with a deep sense of angst and terror about the future of our civilization!
