“The Church is the Body of Christ”
Rev. Linda McDermott
Romans 12: 3 – 18
“Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” ― Teresa of Ávila
We are the Body of Christ. We — you and me — WE are the Body of Christ in this world. Whether we are sitting at a boardroom table making decisions or driving our children to pre-school, logging in on another day at work that will probably look just like any other day at work, or enjoying being out with family or friends. Wherever we find ourselves, and with whomever we find ourselves, WE are the living presence of Jesus to those around us.
What a wonderful honor and overwhelmingly daunting commissioning that is! That God would ask feeble, weak-kneed, unreliable, unpredictable, self-absorbed, often ridiculous you and me to be the hands and feet, the living presence of Christ, to the people and the creation around us is unthinkable! It’s unthinkable — and maybe even unimaginable — for us, but it’s not for God.
But why? you may ask. And how? you might wonder.
The sermon title for this last Sunday of our The Faith We Sing series is “The Church as the Body of Christ.” God help us as we try to wrap our minds (and hearts) around what this huge concept and calling means for us.
See you this Sunday in worship!
Linda

Register in the garden this Sunday between the 9:30 and 11:00 am services, or after the 11:00 am service. Or register online HERE.
Be a part of FAITHWORKS – a variety of exciting volunteer opportunities for anyone and everyone! The day will begin with a communion service in the Leonard Memorial Chapel at 8:30 am. After the service, we will focus our efforts on the following projects:
Stop Hunger Now – a national meal packaging program whose goal is to end hunger by providing food and life-saving aid to those people who are most vulnerable. Our goal is to package 10,000 meals!
Cowtown Brush-Up – a community-wide effort through Habitat for Humanity to paint at least 100 houses a year. Casey Langley, FUMC Director of Youth Ministries, has assembled a group of Youth and their parents for this project.
The Paint Project at the YWCA – a team of painters charged with refurbishing a classroom in the YWCA child development area.
The World Communion Project – on the day before World Communion Sunday, join others as we package gifts of bread for our neighbors and community.
The Gardening Project – if gardening is your passion, then this is your project. Join other avid gardeners in work on a variety of garden beds on the church property.
Mystery Teams – teams of 8 to 10 people will be given $25 to go out and “do some good” in the world. What can we accomplish with just $25? We can’t wait to hear how our Mystery Teams put their creative energy to work!

MUSIC & WORSHIP ARTS
THE ORGAN CONSOLE IS IN!
Although the work continues, the organ console has been installed, explains Jim Whitton, Chair of the Board of Trustees.
“This is an incredibly exciting time for our Church. But that excitement is coupled with a sense of awe and gratitude for those members, past and present, who have given the Church and its Foundation the resources to make these vital improvements possible. It is my hope that these new instruments of worship will enlarge our Congregation and inspire it to provide even greater support for both the outreach programs of our Church and for the Foundation. Those who came before us did their part; so we must do ours.
I am thankful to the Staff and past and present Trustees (particularly Bill Scott and Linda Roe) who have devoted so much time and effort to bring all this to pass. I am also grateful for the leadership of my predecessor, Jack Benson. Without Jack’s tireless and dedicated service over the past four years, we would not be on this wonderful threshold today.”
