“Stand Up, Take Your Mat and Walk”
John 5:2-9
Jesus is calling all of us to get out of our comfort zone – yet more often than not, we find it extremely difficult to do. We feel safe in what we know and it becomes hard to leave the boundaries we’ve created. But, God is persistent with all of us and desperately wants his people to live into their full potential.
Jesus said, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” The man was resistant to getting up. What holds you back from serving God? In what ways is God calling you out of your “comfort zones?”
See you Sunday,
Phyllis
CARTER WORK PROJECT
Now that we’ve reached our financial goal . . .
IT’S TIME FOR VOLUNTEER SIGN UP!
During the week of October 6 – 10, 2014, we’re looking for 125 volunteers, age 18 and up, to work for the Habitat for Humanity Carter Work Project, in which Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, will serve as both hands-on participants and the driving force behind this very special Habitat build.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Sign up in the Garden between services on Sundays August 10, 17, 24, and 31 — or until all the volunteer slots have been filled. You may also sign up online. For fairness and due to the high demand for specific time slots, all volunteer registrations will be time-stamped. Please indicate your first and second choices.
- Following the closing ceremony, our FUMFW Youth will join other local youth ministries in Cowtown Brush Up, which will give a new coat of paint to 50 Fort Worth homes. FUMCFW has 20 volunteer slots available for youth age 13 and up to participate.
THE THIRD PILLAR: EDUCATION
Five Decades of Educational Support for First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth
“Be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove that which is good, and acceptable, and perfect through the will of God.
– Romans 12:2
When some people say “Sunday School Class,” the immediate impression is a room full of children hearing Bible parables and singing memorable worship songs. At First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, that perception is just a beginning and then expands dramatically!

AN EVENING WITH RAY SIMPSON
7:00 pm | Wesley Hall
Be sure to join us for this special opportunity to learn how we can work together for the renewal of an authentic and vital church in our time, drawing from the unique perspective of one of the foremost leaders in Celtic Christian Spirituality. Ray Simpson will be in our midst, sharing with our faith community his wisdom and insights on how we can develop and strengthen our deepest spiritual foundation to embrace this timeless and sacred rhythm in our own lives. In a world of increasing overload, these are the rhythms that bind us together as Christians and ground us spiritually as individuals. Organist Peggy Graff Awarded SPC Certification
Our heartiest congratulations go out to Peggy Graff on her recent SPC (Service Playing Certification) award bestowed by the American Guild of Organists (AGO). This certification award followed Peggy’s successful completion of a comprehensive examination in organ performance, specifically as it relates to playing for religious worship services. Her performance was juried by a national panel of jurors esteemed as some of the top organists in our nation. According to AGO Dean Dale Bench, SPC, CAGO, “This distinction bears witness to Peggy’s superior knowledge and talent, and to her skill in applying her gifts to her work as organist, especially in a religious setting.” Because AGO’s certification program for organists is considered comparable to license and accreditation board standards in other fields, such as accounting, education, medicine, law, etc., we join together in recognizing and congratulating Peggy for this outstanding achievement of professional distinction.
