FUMC WEEKLY 5.3.13

Hi Church Family,

I love the Genesis 1 creation narrative. When I remember it, my mind fills with rich images. I see an extraordinary burst of light. I hear the rushing of waters. I see waves crashing on shorelines and land bursting with vegetation. I picture birds soaring through the air and fish filling oceans and rivers. I hear the purrs, growls, barks, and buzzes of animals. I see a first man and first woman becoming familiar with their world and with one another. It is colorful and alive. It is exciting and pure and truly remarkable.
But I hesitate. I pause. Because I know that in order to be appropriately awed by the world God created, I must acknowledge the materials God used in order to do the work of creation. We are told in the first two verses what materials God had at God’s disposal.
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2)
Thomas Edison said, “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.”
It seems to me that God had junk with which to create. There was no color or shape or system. It was darkness and formlessness and chaos. But God took that pile of junk and turned it into the most beautiful world.
This Sunday we will look more closely at this and we will explore the ways that God continues to transform piles of junk into beautiful things. Each of us has made a mistake or been confronted with tragedy that needed a God-sized imagination to turn into beautiful things.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday and being led in worship by our amazing teenagers!

Grace and peace,
Casey
