Dr. Tim Bruster

“Home by Another Way”

Matthew 2:1-12

Dear Friends,

This Sunday, January 4, is the eleventh day of Christmas, but it is also the Sunday closest to Epiphany, so our Sanctuary Worship will focus on Epiphany, the day when we remember the journey of the wise men, or magi, to find Jesus. The magi were Zoroastrian priests, scholars and astrologers — most likely from Persia. They saw a new, bright light in the sky, and it led them on their journey to find the Christ child. When they found him, they presented highly symbolic gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Then they went home by another way, so as not to alert King Herod of the child’s location, since Herod meant to do the Christ child harm.

Christian tradition has often looked at our own journeys of faith as analogous to this journey of the magi: We are seekers after deeper truth and understanding. We experience our faith more as a journey and less as a destination. The journey is neither short nor easy. We have our own gifts to bring as we seek and find Christ. Once we have found him and have brought our gifts, we are different — and we go home a different way. Our journey changes after that point.

Celebrating and Looking Forward!

For all who shared this extraordinary year with us as a faith community — and all who helped us end this amazing year in a likewise extraordinary manner by making a contribution to help meet our significant year-end challenge, THANK YOU!

We’re still tallying our December 31 postmarked donations, but it looks as if we came very close to closing the significant gap we reported to you in early December. We’ll be sure to let you know next week our final 2014 giving result, just in time to turn our attention toward our 2015 opportunities.

It has probably not escaped your notice that even as we were pushing for a successful close of our 2014 financial year, you also  received your packet in the mail that launches our 2015 Stewardship campaign, This is Why We Give. Over the next few weeks you’ll hear from members of our congregation and our clergy about why they give. Through this lens we’ll study the importance of giving from the Christian perspective by taking a closer look at our church tagline: Love God, Serve Others, Transform Lives.

While we do realize this may seem like a bit of a financial barrage from the church, here are a few things that are important to understand about this pivotal point in our financial year:

  • For 2015 what is most important now is not money, but your commitment to support the church and its ministries for the coming year.
  • Knowing the level of commitment from each of our members will help us plan our programs, events and activities for the coming year to match our level of giving.
  • Establishing that solid base of commitment now will help us avert the year-end gap we experienced this year
  • While gifts are always deeply appreciated and welcome throughout the year — and are put to good use as designated, or to meet special needs and opportunities —  commitments made early and honored as promised are the backbone of our budgeting process.
  • As our staff works hard to plan the programs worship opportunities and activities of our church for the coming year, and as our church leaders begin the planning process to set our 2015 priorities as a faith community, it is essential to our planning to know what our budget will be.

I know you will want to join me and the rest of the FUMCFW Staff, along with more than 200 church members, who have already made their commitment to supporting to the many vital ministries of FUMCFW for the coming year.  Picking up on our earlier emphasis, if every single member of our church pledges to give something this year, we’ll meet our Stewardship goals in record time. And, in the infamous words of Mister Mark, “give what you can, give only what you can, but please give something.”

Thank you in advance for your help and generous support of all the ways in which, together, we Love God, Serve People, and Transform Lives.

Peace and Blessings,

Roger Partridge Signature
