First Talks — Ideas Worth Talking About!
Sundays | 9:30 – 10:30 am | Room 350
Check out this great new Adult Education discussion group meeting on Sunday mornings. It’s a combination of succinct and exciting TED Talk-style presentations followed by facilitated, engaging conversations around the topic of the day. Each week will be different with speakers from around the Metroplex, including artists, educators, theologians, entrepreneurs, and great thinkers of all sorts. These presentations and the conversations that follow will help us find Spirit in every facet of life.
January 15 is our official kickoff when we host Deputy Chief Os Flores. Os is an executive officer for a local municipal police department who has served in the law enforcement field for 19 years. One of his most rewarding experiences includes participation in public safety planning for Super Bowl XLV in regional coordination and communication with local, State, and Federal agencies. Os was also honored to contribute to the integration of community policing strategies within the National Police of Panama, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Come join us to hear his fascinating presentation and check out our discussion group.
Next up on January 22 is artist Karen Blessen from Dallas. Karen is the Founder and Executive Artistic Director of 29 Pieces, an organization dedicated to using art for positive social change. She was recently named Peacemaker of the Year by the Dallas Peace Center for her work teaching and leading students and adults in the Dallas Respect Project, which was recently celebrated with the dedication of a 20-foot sculpture in West Dallas created by students and several community partners. The sculpture reflects an interpretation of the words of a Native American prayer, “make my hands respect the things you have made.” You will be encouraged and enlightened by Karen’s presentation. She is a force for good, using the arts and her uncanny ability to draw people together for positive change.
