United Methodist Women (UMW) make a difference all over the map. Here in Fort Worth, UMW of First Church go the extra mile. UMW President Dorothy Hudson says these women of our church have reached out to help women, youth, and children in our community since 1940, and in 2016 they are continuing this mission started so long ago. “Giving to others is the heart of who we are,” Dorothy adds. “It is our goal and the way we join together to serve and glorify God!”
Want to jump in? You don’t have to travel far to come along for the ride. The 37th Annual FUMCFW UMW Fundraiser is just around the corner, and you can still grab a seat. The 2016 event will be a “Journey Through Faith” at Ridglea Country Club. According to Amber Shive, UMW Special Event Co-Chair, this year stands out because of the unique opportunity to attend two events. “Each event has its own individual flair!” she exclaims. “The evening event is open to everyone, including all of our members who work during the day and all of the incredible Men who support UMW!” Both events will feature guests who are acclaimed speakers and authors. They will share their stories of faith and how God has directed them on their own personal journeys. Here’s a closer look at our itinerary for the trip.

Raffle & Luncheon

Guest speaker: Donna VanLiere
Donna is a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author. Among her 14 books are “The Christmas Shoes” and “The Christmas Blessing” — both of which were adapted into movies starring Rob Lowe, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and Neil Patrick Harris. Donna is a mom, wife, animal lover, and comedian at home. She also enjoys cooking (plus eating), reading, and movies. She loves to teach, inspire, challenge, and encourage dreamers!
Amber describes Chet Garner’s presentation about our beloved city as a must-see. Plus, the evening event will feature some incredible auction items, including but not limited to “Cocktails with Kay Granger.” She adds that the daytime event will keep with UMW’s lovely luncheon tradition and also have an incredible raffle with some don’t-miss items.
Dorothy says what she loves the most about the annual fundraiser is the spirit of love and generosity you feel the moment you walk in the door. “This fundraiser is a joyful event and one that unites our church members in a very unique way,” she explains. “Not only are we supporting organizations that help others, but we are having a fun and fabulous time doing it!” Amber agrees and adds that her favorite thing about this event is having the chance to give back to others while getting an inspiring message yourself. “We want our guests to walk away with a powerful message and a great time!” Amber proclaims. “It is a unique chance for fellowship and giving.”
By the time we reach our final destination, you will know how to let God take the wheel through all of life’s twists and turns. Whether you join in for all or part of this faith journey, the money raised along the way will benefit the many organizations UMW supports such as the Methodist Justice Ministry, Food 4 Kids, FUMCFW Youth Mission Scholarships, Methodist Children’s Home, FUMCFW Children’s Ministries, United Community Centers, and Kids Hope USA. Over the past four years alone, UMW has given $140,000 to our church and community. And as Dorothy points out, all of the money raised is used to support women and children — while none is kept for their operating expenses.
Help support UMW as they raise money to bless others. Get your ticket by Sunday, March 20, and we’ll save you a seat. Purchase one online now or in the Welcome Center on Sunday. Contact Paula Wagstaff (firstname.lastname@example.org) by March 20 for complimentary child care.
