Join Rev. Phyllis Barren for a Wesleyan Adventurers Senior Adult Ministries trip to Memphis, Tennessee and Hot Springs, Arkansas!
We’ll depart First Church at 9:00 am on Monday, October 21 and head for Texarkana for lunch. We’ll arrive in Memphis around 5:00 pm and enjoy a meet-and-greet dinner at 6:00.
On Tuesday we’ll visit Sun Studio, known worldwide as “The Birthplace of Rock’n’Roll.” You’ll stand where Elvis recorded “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” his very first recording, hear inside stories of B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Ike Turner, Johnny Cash, and many more, and see priceless memorabilia from music legends who formed the legacy of Rock’n’Roll. After lunch on Tuesday we’ll visit the Cotton Museum to experience the story of the crop that transformed American culture, formed the South, and changed the history of a nation and the world. Our last stop on Tuesday will be the A – Schwab – General Store, a family-owned general store & soda fountain open since 1876 that also houses the Beale Street Museum and touts, “If you can’t find it at A Schwab, you’re probably better off without it.” Afterwards, you’ll be free to relax at the hotel or explore Beale Street.
On Wednesday we’ll board the bus with our luggage and head to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, The William J Clinton Presidential Library and Museum in Little Rock, and have dinner at Superior Bathhouse Brewery, located in a 100-year-old historic bathhouse.
On Thursday morning we’ll head outdoors to a national park, an entertaining guided tour of the Gangster Museum to trace the history of Chicago and New York gangsters who frequented its historic Bathhouse, and then we’ll take the afternoon to explore Bathhouse Row (where you can even book a massage!), and wind up the day with dinner and a buggy ride at the historic Arlington Hotel.
On Friday, October 25 we’ll begin our day at Garvan Woodland Gardens in the Ouachita Mountains, with floral landscapes, streams, waterfalls, and a Pine Wind Japanese Garden. Nestled under a thick canopy of trees, the nearly six-stories-tall Anthony Chapel quietly beckons those in need of solitude and respite with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and multiple skylights that bring views of the surrounding wooded landscape and changing seasons into its brilliantly designed space.
Following this wonderful respite, we’ll load the buses and begin our return to Fort Worth. With a quick stop for lunch, we expect to arrive home around 5:00 pm.
