Ding-a-lings Unite!

Peggy GraffI am honored to be a board member of the Greater Dallas Handbell Association (GDHA) serving as Festival Chair, and over the past two years I have met and worked with some of the finest musicians and directors in the DFW area. The GDHA recently held its annual Fall Workshop at FUMCFW. The day before the workshop, thousands of bells donated from various churches were set up, transforming six of our Sunday School classrooms on the third floor into workshop classrooms.

About 160 people from over 30 churches in the DFW area attended the all-day workshop, which included interest sessions for beginning ringers (“Rookie Ringers”), seasoned ringers, and directors of handbell ensembles. It was a day of learning and fun for all who attended; and one of the highlights was a concert by the Austin Handbell Ensemble (an auditioned ensemble) performing handbell arrangements of “vinyl” hit tunes ranging from The Beatles and ABBA to The 5th Dimension and Led Zeppelin — and the ringers wore era costumes. We were rocking and rolling to the oldies in the church Sanctuary pews — it was psychedelic! Yes, bells can do more than just play in a worship service at church!

Our own Fifth Street Bells is currently adding bell ringers to the ensemble, and we would like adults 18 and older to consider this wonderful opportunity to serve in music ministry. Sandy Ritthaler is the director of the ensemble which rehearses every Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in Room 313. Fifth Street Bells perform approximately six times in the Sanctuary during worship in its 9-month season. You are invited and welcome to come and join us! Musically yours,
