Tim’s Daily Bread Devotional 2.2.22

By February 2, 2022Daily Bread

Good morning!

I hope this day finds you and your family well. I invite you to take a few moments with me to read and reflect upon today’s scripture selection — and to carry these thoughts with you into your day.

Today’s Scripture: John 12: 44-46

44 Then Jesus cried aloud: “Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness.

Tim’s Devotional Reflection for Today

Today’s brief passage of scripture in some ways sums up what the gospel of John wants to say about Jesus.

To see and know the nature of Jesus is to see and know the nature of God.

When our world becomes dark, Jesus has come as the light that shines in the darkness — and the darkness never overcomes that light.

To believe — or trust — in Jesus is to see that light shining in the darkness. Whenever we   experience darkness in our world today, we know there is also light that shines in the darkness.

In the gospel of John, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world.”  (John 8:12)

In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”  (Matthew 5:14-16, NRSV)

The good news of our faith is that Jesus is the light of the world and followers of Jesus reflect that light into the dark places, bringing hope to others who are struggling in darkness.

How has someone reflected the light of Christ in the dark times of your life?

How have you been able to reflect that light for others?

Hymn Suggestion

“I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light”

I want to walk as a child of the light
I want to follow Jesus
God set the stars to give light to the world
The star of my life is Jesus

In Him there is no darkness at all
The night and the day are both alike
The Lamb is the light of the city of God
Shine in my heart Lord Jesus

I want to see the brightness of God
I want to look at Jesus
Clear Sun of righteousness shine on my path
And show me the way to the Father

In Him there is no darkness at all
The night and the day are both alike
The Lamb is the light of the city of God
Shine in my heart Lord Jesus

I’m looking for the coming of Christ
I want to follow Jesus
When we have run with patience the race
We shall know the joy of Jesus

In Him there is no darkness at all
The night and the day are both alike
The Lamb is the light of the city of God
Shine in my heart Lord Jesus

Thank you for sharing this moment of your day with me, with God, and with these reflections on a portion of scripture.  I hope you will carry these with you throughout your day and night.

Grace and Peace,

Dr. Tim Bruster
